International Surfers Clash in Kuta
Bali Times, June 10, 1986
A large group of visiting beach enthusiasts engaged in a “drunken brawl” on Jl. Poppies 2 near Kuta Beach early Tuesday morning.
"Approximately sixteen male individuals of varying passports were involved in the melee," says arresting officer Sergeant I. Putu Wiradna, of the Bali Regional Police Force.
The exact reasons for the altercation are unknown, however, Officer Wiradna is confident that “The attention of a local woman seemed to be involved”.
The offending parties were apprehended and transported to the Kerobokan prison where they remained detained. The group’s release is imminent, however, since no formal charges have been filed by any of the offenders.
“Everybody’s banged up pretty good, it was a right proper blue”, said detainee Brendan “Dubbo” Kilkenny of Dubbo, Queensland, Australia, “I reckon the tooth fairy’s gonna sh*t herself tonight”.
Officer Wiradna has recommended they pay a visit to Pak Muhammad Ahli Gigi, Denpasar's premier dentist.
No further disturbances have been reported, though it is rumored that the incident is being referred to locally as “The Battle of Poppies Lane”.
The Bali regional police have since increased their presence in the area, stating that maintaining order in the popular spot is paramount to Bali’s tourist industry.
